Product Description
X2CrNiMoN17-11-2 EN 10222-5 1.4406 Stainless Steel EN1092 Flange
1.4406 is a stainless steel grade designation (EN/DIN system) for a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, closely related to 316L but with tighter control of impurities. This grade is often used in more demanding environments, including nuclear and high-purity applications.
Chemical Composition
Element Composition (Weight %)
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.02%
Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.75%
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 2.00%
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.030%
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.015%
Chromium (Cr) 17.0 – 18.0%
Nickel (Ni) 12.5 – 13.5%
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.5 – 3.0%
Nitrogen (N) ≤ 0.10%
Iron (Fe) Balance
Key Composition Benefits
  • Low Carbon (max 0.02%): Greatly improves resistance to intergranular corrosion and makes the material suitable for welding without post-weld heat treatment
  • Chromium (17–18%): Ensures good general corrosion resistance and forms a stable passive surface layer
  • Nickel (12.5–13.5%): Stabilizes the austenitic structure, improving toughness and ductility, especially at low temperatures
  • Molybdenum (2.5–3%): Significantly boosts resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments
  • Very Low Sulfur & Phosphorus: Provides better toughness, cleaner steel, and improved corrosion resistance for critical applications
Typical Applications
1.4406 is often chosen where you need 316L-type properties but with stricter impurity limits, including:
  • Nuclear applications
  • High-purity chemical processing
  • Pharmaceutical plants
  • Environments requiring excellent weldability and corrosion resistance
  • Applications with chloride exposure and slightly more aggressive conditions than standard 316L
For exact values for specific products (bar, tube, plate), always check the mill certificate or relevant standard (e.g., EN 10088) as individual producers may specify narrower ranges within these limits.
