Product Description
P280GH EN1092 Flange Pressure Rating
P280GH is a non-alloy quality steel grade used primarily for pressure vessels and boilers in elevated temperature service. Its chemical composition is strictly defined in European standards such as EN 10216-2 and EN 10028-2.
Chemical Composition
Typical chemical composition of P280GH (in % by weight):
Element Composition Range
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.20
Silicon (Si) 0.10 – 0.40
Manganese (Mn) 0.80 – 1.40
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.025
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.015
Chromium (Cr) ≤ 0.30
Molybdenum (Mo) ≤ 0.08
Nickel (Ni) ≤ 0.30
Copper (Cu) ≤ 0.30
Aluminum (Al) often ≥ 0.020 (as Al total, for deoxidation)
Nitrogen (N) usually controlled, e.g., ≤ 0.012
Key Composition Characteristics
  • Low Carbon (≤ 0.20%): Maintains good weldability and reduces risk of hard, brittle microstructures after welding. Supports toughness at moderate and elevated temperatures.
  • Medium Manganese and Controlled Silicon: Manganese (0.80–1.40%) improves strength and hardenability while preserving good toughness. Silicon (0.10–0.40%) acts as a deoxidizer and provides modest strength increase.
  • Strict Limits on Phosphorus and Sulfur: Low P and S (≤ 0.025% and ≤ 0.015%) reduce hot cracking risk, improve toughness, and enhance reliability for pressure vessels.
  • Low Residual Alloying Elements: P280GH is classified as a non-alloy (carbon-manganese) steel. Small maximum amounts of Cr, Mo, Ni, and Cu are maintained to ensure predictable behavior in service and during welding.
Practical Applications
P280GH is used in boilers, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels. Its balanced composition provides:
  • Adequate strength up to elevated temperatures
  • Good weldability without complex preheat or post-weld heat treatment
  • Reliable toughness and ductility crucial for safety in pressure-containing applications
Important Note: When working on design, welding procedure qualification, or material selection, always confirm the exact chemistry from the applicable standard (EN 10028-2 / EN 10216-2) and the mill test certificate (MTC) for the specific heat/lot you receive.
