Product Description
Alloy C276 Petrochemical & Power Plant Flanges
Alloy C276 (commonly known as Hastelloy C-276) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloy engineered for exceptional corrosion resistance in highly aggressive environments including strong acids and chloride-bearing media. The precise chemical composition is critical as even minor variations can significantly impact performance.
Chemical Composition
Element Composition Range (by weight) Primary Function
Nickel (Ni) Balance Provides overall corrosion resistance and toughness
Molybdenum (Mo) 15.0–17.0% Enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments
Chromium (Cr) 14.5–16.5% Provides resistance to oxidizing media and forms protective passive film
Iron (Fe) 4.0–7.0% Contributes to strength and cost-effectiveness
Tungsten (W) 3.0–4.5% Improves localized corrosion resistance and performance in reducing environments
Cobalt (Co) ≤ 2.5% Residual element influencing strength and corrosion behavior
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.01% Critical low content minimizes carbide precipitation and prevents intergranular corrosion
Minor Elements (controlled as impurities):
  • Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.0%
  • Vanadium (V): ≤ 0.35%
  • Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.08%
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.04%
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.03%
Excessive amounts of these minor elements can adversely affect corrosion resistance and weldability.
Key Performance Benefits
Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: The nickel-molybdenum-chromium-tungsten combination makes C276 one of the most corrosion-resistant alloys available, suitable for hot concentrated acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric), mixed acids, and chloride-bearing solutions.
Versatile Environmental Performance: Chromium provides protection in oxidizing conditions, while molybdenum and tungsten enhance performance in reducing environments. Few alloys handle both conditions as effectively as C276.
Superior Weldability: The extremely low carbon content and carefully controlled impurities minimize the risk of sensitization and intergranular attack in the heat-affected zone, ensuring excellent resistance to weld decay.
Important: For precise composition requirements in design, certification, or procurement, always refer to relevant standards (ASTM B575, B622, B619) or manufacturer mill test certificates. Actual composition typically falls within the middle ranges specified.
